Operating weight

Operating weight influences trailer capacity, axle spacing, and whether the loaded combination will require an overweight permit. Confirm whether the published specification includes the installed bucket, coupler, counterweight, fluids, and optional equipment.

Overall height

The cab, exhaust, beacon, antenna, or guarding can be the highest point. A lower trailer deck may be needed to control overall height. Never assume a step deck or flatbed is suitable until the machine and deck heights are combined.

Overall width

Measure the outside of the tires and the installed attachment. Wide tires, chains, fenders, or an oversized bucket can determine the permitted width even when the loader body is narrower.

Overall length and articulation position

The loader should be aligned and secured in the approved transport position. A machine left partially articulated can change deck use, weight distribution, and securement geometry. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for the articulation lock or steering-frame lock.

Choosing the Right Trailer for Wheel Loader Hauling

The appropriate trailer depends on the loader’s dimensions, weight distribution, loading angle, attachment configuration, and site access. The simplest legal configuration that safely handles the machine is generally preferable.

Removable gooseneck trailer

An RGN allows the front of the trailer to detach so an operable loader can travel onto the deck from ground level. This can provide a practical loading approach for larger articulated loaders. The site needs firm, level ground and enough space for the tractor and trailer to align, detach, load, reconnect, and leave.

Lowboy or multi-axle lowboy

A lowboy helps control loaded height and can support heavier wheel loaders when the deck and axle configuration are appropriate. Large loaders may need additional axles to distribute weight, but that does not automatically make every shipment an extreme superload.

Step-deck or double-drop trailer

Compact or mid-size machines may fit a step deck when weight, height, ramp angle, and loading access allow. A double-drop may provide a lower main deck for taller equipment, but its loading method and usable deck length must be confirmed before dispatch.

Flatbed trailer

Some compact loaders can use a flatbed if their loaded height, weight, ground clearance, and ramp requirements fit the configuration. Because the deck is higher, the final height and loading angle deserve careful review.

Should the Bucket Remain Attached?

The bucket can often remain installed when the deck, width, length, weight distribution, and securement plan allow. In other cases, removing the bucket or another work tool may reduce the loaded width or length, improve axle distribution, or make loading more practical.

If an attachment travels separately, provide its dimensions and weight and confirm how it will be lifted, loaded, blocked, and secured. A detached bucket should never be treated as loose incidental cargo. Forks, grapples, snow equipment, and specialty couplers can require their own loading plan.

Preparing an Articulated Wheel Loader for Transport

Preparation should follow the operator’s manual and the carrier’s approved loading plan. Before pickup:

  • Clean excessive mud, aggregate, and loose debris from accessible areas
  • Lower the bucket or attachment into the approved transport position
  • Install the articulation or steering-frame lock as directed

The loading area should be firm, level, and clear of personnel or equipment not involved in the operation. Confirm that ramps, winches, cranes, or other loading equipment are rated for the actual machine and attachment.

49 CFR 393.130 applies specific requirements to wheeled or tracked heavy equipment weighing 10,000 pounds or more. Accessory equipment must be lowered and secured, and covered machinery must be restrained against forward, rearward, lateral, and vertical movement with at least four tiedowns attached near the front and rear or to designated mounting points.

The responsible carrier determines the final securement arrangement. The shipper can prevent delays by identifying approved tie-down locations and reporting damaged, blocked, or modified securement points before dispatch.

Pickup and Delivery Access

A correctly selected trailer still needs enough room to enter, load, unload, and leave safely. Wheel loaders frequently move between jobsites, rental yards, dealer facilities, farms, quarries, and municipal staging areas where access can vary.

  • Confirm a firm and level loading surface
  • Measure gates and check overhead clearance
  • Verify turning and backing space for the complete tractor-trailer combination
  • Identify soft ground, steep grades, ditches, curbs, medians, and narrow approaches
