Peterbilt car hauler used for professional vehicle transport

Open auto transport moves a car, SUV, pickup or van on an uncovered carrier. It is a practical option for many everyday vehicles, dealership purchases and relocations. The vehicle travels on a trailer, but remains exposed to weather and road debris. This guide explains what to compare before booking, what affects the quote and how to prepare for pickup.

How open carrier car shipping works

An open carrier may transport several customers’ vehicles on the same trip. The carrier plans the loading order and route around vehicle sizes, delivery stops and available space. Sharing a route can make open shipping economical, but it does not mean a truck leaves immediately or travels directly between your two addresses.

After the vehicle details and route are reviewed, pickup is coordinated with an available carrier. The vehicle’s condition is documented before loading and checked again at delivery. Keep copies of the pickup and delivery inspection records, often included in the bill of lading.

What changes an open auto transport quote?

  • Pickup and delivery markets: Total distance matters, but a rural location or a less frequently traveled route can also affect availability.
  • Vehicle size and modifications: A large pickup, lifted SUV or modified van can need more trailer space or a different loading plan than a standard sedan.
  • Operating condition: Disclose whether the vehicle starts, rolls, steers and brakes. A car that cannot move under its own power may require additional equipment.
  • Timing: Route demand, seasonal traffic and the flexibility of the pickup window influence the available options.
  • Location access: Gates, narrow streets, low branches and parking restrictions can require a nearby meeting point.

When comparing quotes, use the same vehicle details, route, condition and pickup window. Ask what the total includes, when payment is due and how changes to the shipment would affect the price. A low estimate is not enough information to compare two transport arrangements.

When should you choose enclosed shipping?

Open transport can suit a standard daily driver when exposure during transit is acceptable. For an exotic, restored, collector or other high-value vehicle, the finish, ground clearance and loading requirements may justify additional protection. Enclosed auto transport provides a covered environment; confirm the actual loading equipment and available clearances before booking.

Neither method eliminates every risk. Do not assume that open or enclosed service automatically covers every kind of damage. Ask for the assigned carrier’s insurance documentation and review applicable cargo limits, exclusions and claim instructions before pickup.

A practical pickup checklist

  1. Confirm the vehicle details. Disclose mechanical problems, fluid leaks, modifications, low ground clearance and unusual dimensions before the carrier is assigned.
  2. Prepare the handoff. Make working keys available and share any special starting, alarm or parking-brake instructions.
  3. Remove loose property. Take out valuables, toll tags and unsecured accessories. Personal belongings are not insured as part of the vehicle shipment.
  4. Follow the carrier’s instructions. Confirm fuel or EV charge requirements, access arrangements and who will release or receive the vehicle.
  5. Record the condition. Photograph the exterior and note existing marks on the pickup inspection. Keep the photos and paperwork until the delivery is complete.

Pickup windows, access and delivery

Pickup and delivery dates are estimates. Weather, traffic, loading delays, equipment availability and earlier stops can affect the trip. Provide a reachable contact at each end and tell ETS about dealership hours, auction releases or gated-community restrictions in advance.

The carrier will get as close to your requested addresses as safely and legally possible. If the truck cannot access a location, agree on an appropriate nearby meeting point before the handoff. Do not assume that a small residential driveway can accommodate a loaded car carrier.

At delivery, inspect the vehicle against the pickup record before signing the delivery paperwork. Document any new concern on the delivery record, take photographs and promptly contact the transport coordinator and carrier about the next steps.

What to send for your quote

Provide the year, make and model, pickup and delivery ZIP codes, operating condition and preferred pickup window. Add photos and measurements for a lifted, modified or unusually large vehicle. Explain access restrictions or release deadlines so they can be reviewed before dispatch.
